Transrectal ultrasonography (TRUS) is a way of creating an image of the prostate gland using sound waves. Transvaginal ultrasonography (TVS) is finding increasing clinical application in obstetrics as well as in gynecology. It is useful in the evaluation of patients with mid-trimester miscarriage and the prediction and diagnosis of pre-term labor. Ultrasound may also have a place in cervical assessment prior to induction of labor. Ultrasound practitioners need to acquire and maintain skills to reproducibly assess cervical parameters to inform the clinical decision-making process.

Aims of the Course

This course is aimed at obstetricians and gynecologists, trainees, midwives and ultrasonographers who wish to update their basic knowledge and practice of cervical sonography as a screening and diagnostic tool in obstetrics. The course will cover all aspects of the theory and practice of transvaginal ultrasound in obstetrics in relation to mid-trimester pregnancy loss, pre-term prediction and intrapartum applications. It will also cover the basics of the assessment of the non-pregnant uterus and adnexa, especially in the management of early pregnancy failure.
